Morality in the Modern World Sadomasochism, the Superego, and Two Systems  |  View Full Calendar

Presented by Kerry Kelly Novick & Jack Novick (Pre-registration has closed, please pay at the door)

9/14/2017

Kerry and Jack Novick note that Freud’s struggle with the sadomasochism of his patients led directly to his theory of the superego and its role in personal and social morality. Using clinical material from the analysis of an older adult, they apply their dual-track model of two systems of self-regulation: the “closed,” sadomasochistic, omnipotent system and the “open,” competent, loving and reality-attuned system, to trace the origins, development and functions of the “closed” and “open” superego. They suggest that the application of this model will help restore the importance of moral development and the superego in psychoanalytic theory and technique, offer ways to address persistent sadomasochism, and illuminate some societal anxieties and tensions underlying larger historical and cultural conflicts.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

·        Differentiate manifestations of closed-system conscience functioning and open-system, helpful internal conscience

·        Apply concurrent techniques for addressing closed- and open-system material

·        Construct a coherent narrative of patients’ moral development
