Kanchanjangha (1962) was the first film Satyajit Ray made that was based on his original screenplay, and was also his first film in color. It tells the story of an upper class Bengali family on vacation in the picturesque town of Darjeeling, with Mount Kanchenjungha looming large in the background. Through clever dialogue between the various members of the family, Ray depicts the entrapment of the contemporary Bengali woman under the constant domination of the powerful father.
